Ice age is one of my favourite animations of all time. I feel like a big kid when watching Scrat and the rest of the gang. It's full of humor and has some very memorable moments. With the gang back in their fourth installement (Ice Age 4: Continental Drift), Activision have released a tie-in game to go with it. Unforchanatly, the game is a shallow mess that offers very little enjoyment.
Ice Age: Arctic Games is a Kinect-based title. There is no real plot here. The game is simply a bunch of light mini games. You start by choosing from two teams. You can either pick your favourite furry friends, or go for the evil Pirates. Once you choose, you will then play a selection of mini games. Most of
the games involve racing down an ice path, whilst trying to collect acorns. It's more of an obstacle course, with you dodging trees, rocks, etc. It sounds like a lot fun with Kinect, but unresponsive and sluggish controls make it unbearable. One of the mini games, Diego’s obstacle course, has you trying to jump over trees. When you jump, Diego jumps, but turning left and right is a nightmare. It never feels smooth, and the fast movements have you constantly fighting over the controls.
There's not many games to play either. It wont take long to run through each of them. You can go back to earn gold medals that you missed, but I don't expect the interest curve to last more than one hour. Kids at a small age might be glued to the screen over their favourite characters, but there's not enough
content to keep them interested. The bad controls will make them far too fustraited, rather than enjoying the game.
Ice Age 4: Arctic games is simply a shallow and forgettable tie-in. Movie games are always under presure, but bringing them to Kinect is a totaly different story. They dont go well togeather, and Ice Age 4: Arctic Games proves it
